Canada Express Entry Program: Your Path to Permanent Residency
The Canada Express Entry program is a highly popular and efficient pathway for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada and obtain permanent residency. Designed to select immigrants based on their ability to contribute to Canada’s economy, Express Entry manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with foreign work experience who want to immigrate to Canada permanently.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For skilled workers who have Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents.
Â
Benefits of Express Entry

How to Improve Your CRS Score
There are several strategies to potentially improve your CRS score and increase your chances of receiving an ITA:
Â
- Improve Language Proficiency: Retake language tests to achieve higher scores in English and/or French.
- Gain More Work Experience: Accumulate more skilled work experience, particularly Canadian work experience.
- Pursue Higher Education: Obtain an additional degree, diploma, or certificate.
- Obtain a Provincial Nomination: Apply for a Provincial Nominee Program, as a nomination grants a significant number of additional CRS points.
- Secure a Job Offer: An arranged employment offer from a Canadian employer can boost your score.
Canada’s Express Entry system uses a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. While the CRS score determines who receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA), there are fundamental eligibility criteria that must be met for each of the three programs managed by Express Entry:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Skilled Work Experience: At least one year of continuous, full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in the last 10 years, classified under TEER Category 0, 1, 2, or 3 of the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
- Language Ability: Demonstrate proficiency in English or French through a recognized language test (IELTS, CELPIP for English; TEF, TCF for French) with a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7 in all four abilities (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
- Education: A Canadian secondary (high school) or post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, OR an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an approved agency proving your foreign education is equal to a Canadian credential.
- Funds: Sufficient settlement funds, unless you are currently able to legally work in Canada or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
- Selection Factors: Score at least 67 points out of 100 on the FSWP’s own six selection factors (age, education, language proficiency, work experience, arranged employment, and adaptability).
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Skilled Work Experience: At least two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in a skilled trade within the five years before applying. The experience must be in one of the eligible skilled trades listed in the NOC.
- Language Ability: Meet the minimum language requirements: CLB 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing.
- Job Offer or Certificate of Qualification: Have a valid job offer of full-time employment for a total of at least one year OR a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial body.
- No Education Requirement: There is no education requirement for the FSTP, but having Canadian education or an ECA can improve your CRS score.
- Funds: Sufficient settlement funds, unless you are currently able to legally work in Canada or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Skilled Work Experience: At least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada within the three years before applying. This experience must be in a TEER Category 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation.
- Language Ability: Meet the minimum language requirements based on your NOC TEER category:
- NOC TEER 0 or 1: CLB 7 in all four abilities.
- NOC TEER 2 or 3: CLB 5 in all four abilities.
- No Education Requirement: There is no education requirement for the CEC, but having Canadian education or an ECA can improve your CRS score.
- Intention to Live Outside Quebec: You must plan to live outside of Quebec.
General Admissibility: In addition to program-specific criteria, all Express Entry candidates must be admissible to Canada, meaning they must not have any criminal inadmissibility, medical inadmissibility, or other issues that would prevent them from entering the country.
